Belarus Canoe Association wins a CAS case

26/01/2017 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) published a press release on Monday stating the Belarusian men's canoe and kayak team was wrongly banned from last year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for drug offences and has lifted its suspension from all competitions. A CAS Panel ruled that there was not enough evidence to uphold several alleged anti-doping offences at a training camp in April 2016.

Remember, five Belarusian team members tested positive for meldonium last April. Belarus canoe team was at a training camp in Le Temple-sur-Lot, France, when it was raided by the French police and customs. The police and customs confiscated different substances, medications, material and medical equipment. Seventeen athletes also underwent the doping tests, five of the tested athletes failed the test after the meldonium was found in their samples.

The CAS has ruled in the athlete’s favour but the reasons behind the decision have not been made public yet. The CAS websites says the Arbitral Award will be published in a few days.
