David Cal the main protagonist of the National Gala canoeing awards in Spain

David CalSpanish Canoe Federation (Real Federación Española de Piragüismo) paid a special tribute to the legend of sprint canoeing David Cal at the XXIII Gala national canoeing awards held in Madrid. Cal received a special recognition for his impressive canoeing career. With five Olympic medals, he won a gold (C1 1000m – Athens 2004) and four silvers (C1 500m – Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008; C1 1000m – Beijing 2008 and London 2012), he is the best Spanish athlete competing at the Summer Olympic Games of all times. 33-year old Spaniard decided to finish his impressive career due to the lack of motivation. “You have to give up a lot and work hard every day. A number of things led me to take this decision,” Cal said for the Mundo Deportivo. Now he will focus on his studies and cooperation with the University in Murcia (UCAM). He was not the only athlete under the spotlight though.

Paddlers encounter dangerous visitor during their training

With less than 200 days remaining until the opening ceremony of the biggest sports event of the year – Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro – best paddlers are training hard to be in top shape in the season 2016. Many of the best slalom paddlers are now in Australia where they work on their skills at the 2000 Olympic Slalom Course in Penrith. One of the training days was especially unusual as they had an extremely dangerous visitor at the course. As you can see in the video made by European, World and Olympic Champion Daniele Molmenti (ITA) snake found its way not only to the river bank but also into the water. The eastern brown snake is considered the world's second most venomous land snake.

He also pointed out that a year 2015 was really great for him not only in the sports arena but also outside sport. As he said he managed to find balance in his life. “This was the year that I have been both athletically and outside the sport more calm and balanced which meant that I performed better in kayak.
