27/01/2017 - After the Olympic season 2016 many competitors announced retirement, including numerous medallists from the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. Health problems forced canoe slalom athlete Jure Meglič to call it quits. Slovenian-born paddler had the most success as the member of Slovenian national team. Since 2014 he competed for Azerbaijan.

27/01/2017 - Canoe Federation of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the Committee for canoe slalom selected the best athletes and clubs in the season 2016. Ljubomir Spasikj received an award for the best paddler of the year in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the previous season. Member of the canoeing club Gemidžii Veles used to compete both in canoe slalom as well as in wildwater canoeing but focused more on the wildwater canoeing recently. This did not come as a surprise since Skopje (MKD) will host the 2017 ECA Wildwater Canoeing European Championships in May and Spasikj wishes to perform well in front of a home crowd.
Enis Nebiovski of the canoe club Vardar received an award for the best young paddler, while his club Vardar from Veles picked up an award for the best club in the previous season.

26/01/2017 - One of the legends of canoe slalom – Italian Daniele Molmenti – decided to say goodbye to the competitive sport. 32-year-old Molmenti is one of the few canoe slalom paddlers in the history who won an individual gold medal at every major canoeing event – Olympic Games, European Championships and World Championships. He is, however, the only one who managed to achieve the titles in men’s kayak, the others who also won the Olympic, World and European Champion titles are Štěpánka Hilgertová, Elena Kaliská (both K1W), Michal Martikán, Tony Estanguet (both C1M) and Pavol Hochschorner/Peter Hochschorner (C2M).

26/01/2017 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) published a press release on Monday stating the Belarusian men's canoe and kayak team was wrongly banned from last year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for drug offences and has lifted its suspension from all competitions. A CAS Panel ruled that there was not enough evidence to uphold several alleged anti-doping offences at a training camp in April 2016.

25/01/2017 - Greek-born slalom canoeist Sideris Tasiadis found the focus and drive to win Olympic silver after embracing his new German surroundings.

15/01/2017 - Spanish-Slovenian duo Federico Vega – Jošt Zakrajšek is the winner of the 41st edition of the world famous Rio Negro canoe marathon race in Argentina. Other European paddlers, competing in Argentina, too, finished the race in the top ten. Hungarian Canoe Marathon paddler Adrian Boros who paddled together with Argentinean Gonzalo Carreras was third in the final standings, while Serbian Krisztina Bedecs finished sixth in the overall standings together with Julian Algañaraz in a K2 mix boat. They were however unbeatable in the K2 mix category.
