23/12/2016 - The World Beach Games are set to take place for the first time in 2019 in San Diego, USA, and among the sports proposed for the inaugural games is also ocean canoeing. The first games were supposed to be organised in 2017 but early this year it has been announced that the games are postponed to the year 2019 (proposed dates are between October 10 and 20). The organisers are facing budget cuts – the budget for the organisation of the event has shrunk from 124 million Euros to just 46 million Euros. What is interesting is the World Beach Games are expected to consist of 19 sport disciplines all different from those in the Olympic programme. Besides ocean canoeing San Diego is likely to host athletes in stand-up paddling, windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing, wall climbing, basketball 3x3, beach handball, karate and jiu jitsu martial arts, beach volleyball (more likely in a 4x4 format than 2x2), beach soccer, beach tennis, beach wrestling, BMX big air, skateboarding big air, flying disc – ultimate, but also triathlon, water polo and marathon swimming. Since these sports disciplines are not confirmed yet, the programme changes are possible.
