German canoe sprint national championships was held on a world-renowned venue in Duisburg. Ronald Rauhe won the 200 metres event and his 72nd German national champion title so far. Conrad Scheibner, Jacob Schopf, Jule Hake and Lisa Jahn closed the competition weekend with two titles each.
38-year-old German kayaker Ronald Rauhe showed he still has power to fight the younger paddlers. In the 200 metres final he was almost a second faster than second placed Jonas Draeger, while Moritz Florstedt picked up bronze medal.
“The German national title is something special and has great significance. It's a shame for the children that they can't be here. And the family would love to take part in a competition again. But it's better to compete without spectators than not to compete at all,” said Rauhe.
Conrad Scheibner also won two national champion titles. In the 1000 metres final he was five seconds and a half faster than three times Olympic Champion Sebastian Brendel and Michael Mueller was third. Scheibner, Adam Moritz and Michael Mueller were top three in the men’s C1 500 metres final. In the 200 metres event Peter Kretschmer took the title, finishing the race ahead of Fabien Schatz and Nico Pickert.
In absence of some of the best German female competitors, such as Steffi Kriegerstein, Sabrina Hering-Pradler and Tina Dietze, younger competitors took the opportunity to take the spotlight.
Jule Hake picked up two gold medals in K1 500 and 200 metres finals. In the shortest distance Paulina Paszek finished second and Sarah Bruessler third. Bruessler was second in the 500 metres finals, where Jasmin Fritz took the third position. A collection of medals was complete when Sarah Bruessler crossed the finish line of the 1000 metres event in the first position, followed by Nina Krankemann and Julia Hergert.
In women’s canoe it was a double win for Lisa Jahn, who was the best in 500 and 200 metres distance. In both finals Anika Loske finished second, while Sophie Koch picked up bronze medal in 500 metres final and Lina Bielicke in 200 metres event.
