Aleksandras Alekrinskis remains president of the Lithuanian Canoe Federation

Aleksandras Alekrinskis remains president of the Lithuanian Canoe Federation 7.12.2021

Lithuanian Canoe Federation will continue in its path. Aleksandras Alekrinskis, an associate professor at the Lithuanian Sports University and international technical official, has been reelected to the position of the president for his third term.

The 60-year-old Alekrinskis received 23 votes, while his opponent Darius Čereška got 11 votes. Arunas Tomkevičius has been elected as Vice-President, Romuald Petrukanec became Secretary General again, Vytautas Vaičikonis has been entrusted with the duties of the chairman of the coaching council. Martynas Menkevičius was elected as the Chairman of the Judicial Council.

“The opponent had his vision, his programme. I haven't discovered anything new, we will just continue the work we started, we will improve. Apparently, our activities are more acceptable, which is why they voted,” said the reelected president.

On the objectives in the following term he said, “A difficult question. There are so many big changes in Lithuania and abroad, that is, international ones, that it is extremely difficult to adapt to them. The first thing is to put together a team. Much of it has remained the same for us to continue working on. When the previous sports system disintegrated after 2018, a heavy burden fell on the shoulders of the federation, we had to gather people, train them so that we could work. Today, the first task is to adapt to the changes that are taking place in Lithuania on a daily basis. The second thing is that we will need to respond quickly to international change - the 2024 sports Olympic programme. We automatically switch from one Olympic distance to another in the federation as well. In September, the World Championships took place in Copenhagen, where, for the first time, the main athletes competed in a new 500m race - a K4 and a C2. If we build on these results, we should benefit from the change. After all, some athletes have moved from long distances - 1000m - to this half shorter. They are morally and physically ready for it. On the other hand, for a team boat, 500m is like a sprint. The winners of the Olympic Games and the winners of the World, European Championships, who previously competed in the 200m are now paddling in K4s. And they showed a pretty high result. Getting into the top six in the world is a fantastic result. Of course, there is still time for all parties to prepare, but today it is a good indicator. We have the potential to prepare with a goal now. Of course, everything is changing and it will be difficult to say what will happen in 2024, but the mood is positive.”
