Anticipation Builds Ahead of Decisive Matches at the 2025 ECA Canoe Polo European Championships 13.9.2025

The third day of competition at the 2025 ECA Canoe Polo European Championships in Avranches, France, brought the first crucial knockout matches. All quarter-finals have now been played, revealing which teams will battle for medals on Sunday. Still in contention are the national teams of France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands.


The men’s senior tournament quarter-finals delivered intense and hard-fought encounters. Pre-tournament favourites Germany and Denmark – finalists at the previous European Championships in 2023 in Brandenburg – have both been eliminated from medal contention. Reigning European champions Denmark were narrowly defeated by Spain 5–4, while hosts France convincingly beat Germany 4–0. Switzerland booked their semi-final place with a 3–2 win over Portugal, and Italy edged past Great Britain 2–1. Sunday's semi-finals will see Spain face Switzerland and Italy take on France. In the match for 9th place, the Netherlands beat Belgium 5–1, while Poland secured 11th place with a 5–3 victory over Sweden.
 
In the women’s senior tournament, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain have advanced to the semi-finals. Germany beat Italy 4–1, France narrowly overcame Denmark 4–3, the Netherlands recorded a strong 8–3 win over Switzerland, and Spain defeated Great Britain 4–2. Sunday's semi-final pairings are Germany v France and Netherlands v Spain. Germany are the defending champions, having beaten Spain 3–2 in the previous final. Denmark and Switzerland will play for 5th place, while Italy and Great Britain will contest 7th.
 
In the men’s U21 tournament, Italy remain in the hunt to defend their European title after a convincing 5–1 quarter-final win over Great Britain. They will face hosts France in the semi-final, who cruised past Denmark 10–4. Germany also progressed with a 5–1 victory over the Netherlands and will meet Spain in the semi-finals, following Spain’s 4–2 win over Switzerland. Great Britain and Switzerland will play for 5th place, with Denmark and the Netherlands facing off for 7th. Saturday also saw placement matches for 9th and 11th place: Lithuania took 9th after a 2–1 win over Belgium, while Ireland claimed 11th with a close 5–4 victory against Sweden.
 
In the women’s U21 tournament, defending champions the Netherlands – who beat Germany in the 2023 final in Brandenburg – are once again among the medal contenders. They edged out Italy 2–1 in the quarter-finals and will now face France in the semi-finals, following the hosts' commanding 7–2 win over Poland. The other semi-final will see Germany play Spain, after Germany’s 10–1 victory over Ireland and Spain’s 5–1 win against Great Britain. Italy and Great Britain will play for 5th place, while Poland and Ireland will contest 7th.
 
Sunday marks the final day of the 2025 ECA Canoe Polo European Championships in Avranches, where the new European champions in the senior and U21 men’s and women’s tournaments will be crowned.
