Award for the Slovak canoe slalom team 9.1.2020

Michal Martikan, Alexander Slafkovsky and Matej Benuš received the best team of the year award at the Slovak Sportsperson of the year awards. 91 sports journalists voted for the best sportsmen, sportswomen and teams of the year 2019.

Successful Slovak canoeists Michal Martikan, Alexander Slafkovsky and Matej Benuš received award for the best team of the year after their ninth consecutive World Champion title in team events at the 2019 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships which was held in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain.

“It is a great satisfaction. We still give our maximum. Sports journalists evaluated that winning World champion title nine times in a row is cool, and named us winners. Now there is a new challenge ahead of us, even rivals are waiting to see if we can reach the magic ten,” said Alexander Slafkovsky.

Slovak K4 500 metres team with Samuel Balaž, Erik Vlček, Csaba Zalka and Adam Botek finished in third place in the best team of the year category, while K4 1000 metres crew (Denis Myšak, Akos Gacsal, Juraj Tarr, Gabor Jakubik) won eight place in this category.

In individual category the title of the Sportsperson of the year went to the hands of alpine skier Petra Vlhova, born in Liptovsky Mikulaš, who is a fan of canoe slalom and loves to paddle herself too. The highest ranked paddler was Matej Benuš who was ninth. Peter Gelle was 12th, Alexander Slafkovsky 17th, Mariana Petrušova 21st and Jakub Grigar 33rd.
