Barbora Dimovova (CZE) came to the European Championships in top form. The 2017 World Paddle Award winner in Junior of the Year category won both individual titles in women’s junior kayak event as well as two gold medals in team events. To win the gold medal in sprint she produced 1,81 seconds faster run than her closest opponent and teammate Gabriela Satkova. Hannah Mueller (SUI) finished Sunday’s final in third place.
Mathilde Rosa (ITA) was the fastest in women’s U23 kayak final. She was 0,60 seconds faster than second placed Pauline Freslon (FRA) and 0,69 seconds faster than another Italian kayaker Giulia Formenton who won bronze medal.
In women’s C1 junior final it was Cecilia Panato (ITA) who won the second European Champion title in Skopje this week. Czech paddler Gabriela Satkova finished the race in second place and Elsa Gaubert from France was third.
Martina Satkova (CZE) was a bit surprisingly left without a medal in women’s U23 kayak final, where she was fourth, but this did not threw her of the rails in canoe final. She produced the best run to win the European Champion title in front of Alice Panato (ITA) and Maren Lutz (GER).
Paddler of the day in junior category was Augustin Reboul. Young Frenchman first won the European Champion title in men’s junior kayak final and later added the second individual gold medal in junior C2 final where he paddled together with Gael de Brye. At top of that Reboul already won the classic race European Champion title in K1 and also classic C2 title with de Brye on Thursday.
Vid Oštrbenk from Slovenia was the silver medallist of junior K1 final, finishing only 0,04 seconds behind Reboul, and Italian Francesco Ciotoli was third. Italian had silver medal in classic event of this championships.
The order of men’s junior C2 crews was the same in sprint as it was in classic race. Reboul and de Brye won in front of their compatriot Manoel and Tanguy Roussin and Czech duo Tomas Hendrych – Richard Nachtigal was third. In the U23 men’s C2 event it was a French celebration as well thanks to Nicolas Sauteur and Tom Ydoux. Germans Ole Schwarz and Janosch Sulzer were second and Juraj Skakala – Matus Gewissler from Slovakia third.
The first favourite of men’s K1 U23 final Anže Urankar won the anticipated gold medal. He was 0,61 seconds faster than Bram Sikkens from Belgium and German kayaker Yannic Lemmen was 0,67 seconds behind to pick up the bronze medal.
Filip Janu (CZE) was the fastest canoeist in junior final, finishing the race ahead of two Frenchmen - Mathis Perreau and Louis Passernig. Both French canoeists were in positions two and three also in the classic race. Nicolas Sauteur (FRA) won the U23 European Champion title in men’s canoe, in front of Michal Smoldas (CZE) and Mattia Quintarelli (ITA).
In the last individual final of the championships in Skopje – junior women’s C2 sprint event – Margot Beziat and Elsa Gaubert (FRA) won the gold medal. Cecile Panato and Marta Benedetti (ITA) were second and junior classic event European Champions Eva Alina Hočevar and Lea Novak (SLO) were third.
Shortly after the individual finals were finished some of the competitors paddled again in the team sprint events. The first three team finals – K1W Junior, K1W U23 and C1M junior – were won by Czech Republic. Germany was second and France third in women’s junior K1 team event, Italy and Germany joined Czech Republic on the podium of women’s kayak U23 event, while Croatia finished second and France third in men’s junior C1 team race. Czech Republic also won gold medal in women’s U23 C1 race, Italy was second and France third.
Italian team was the fastest in men’s U23 C1 event, finishing the race in front of Croatia and France. Germany won a gold medal in front of France and Belgium in men’s junior K1 team event. Slovenia was the fastest in men’s U23 kayak team race. Germany was second and Belgium third in this event.
