Canoe Marathon European Championships medallists shone at World Championships, too 6.9.2023

Vejen, Denmark, hosted the 2023 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships and European paddlers were once more in the spotlight, claiming majority of the medals. Hungary topped the medal table with 16 medals and Spain concluded championships with a total of 14 medals.

Among the medallists of the World Championships were those who reached podium positions earlier this summer at European Championships in Slavonski Brod, Croatia. There were also competitors who travelled to Denmark straight from Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg.

Portuguese canoe sprint star Fernando Pimenta was the one who showed excellent form from Duisburg in Denmark, winning two gold medals at Canoe Marathon World Championships. First he won in the short marathon race (3400 m), ahead of Mads Pedersen (DEN) and Eivind Vold (NOR).

Norwegian Eivind Vold had a championships to remember. Not only did he win bronze medal in men’s kayak short race, he was third also in the 29.8 km long marathon and won third bronze medal of the championships in men’s K2 together with his brother Jon.

European Champion Mads Pedersen (DEN) had to congratulate Pimenta in the short race and settle with silver medal, but he did not allow any surprises in the long course, claiming gold medal ahead of Andrew Birkett (RSA) and Eivind Vold.

Spanish canoeist Manuel Campos celebrated three World Champion titles. He was unbeatable in men’s canoe short race, 26.2 kilometres long marathon and in C2 together with Diego Romero.

In women’s canoe events the first favourite Liudmyla Babak from Ukraine won World champion title in 15.4 kilometres long race, but had to congratulate Hungarian Zsofia Kisban in the short race, and picked up silver medal.

In women’s kayak, Sweden’s Melina Andersson and Hungarian Vanda Kiszli dominated the events. Kiszli won the long 26.2 kilometres race ahead of Andersson, while Andersson took the World Champion title ahead of Kiszli in the short race. Kiszli, however, won her third medal of the championships, her second gold, in women’s K2 together with Emese Kohalmi.
