Canoe Marathon legends again at the top of Europe 27.7.2024

Saturday's programme at the 2024 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Poznan was dedicated to senior individual events and two junior events. Favourites of senior events Babak, Campos, Kiszli and Pedersen did it again and enriched their medals collection with another European Champion titles.


Spanish canoeist Manuel Campos was once more unbeatable in men's C1 event at the Canoe Marathon European Championships and won his sixth European Champion title. He won gold medals in 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024. This time it took him 1:52:34.02 to finish the 22,60 kilometres long course to succeed his compatriot Manuel Garrido who won gold medal last year. Portuguese canoeist Rui Lacerda was second (+9.85), while second Spaniard at the start of this event Diego Romero picked up bronze medal (+30.76).
 
Liudmyla Babak from Ukraine also celebrated her sixth European Champion title in 15,40 kilometres long canoe women's canoe marathon race. The 27-year-old paddler was crowned European Champion also in the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. She set the time 1:25:30.58 and was more than a minute faster than Paulina Grzelkiewicz from Poland (+1:07.21), while Yseline Huet from France won bronze medal (+1:50.40). The same three athletes were on the podium last year in Slavonski Brod in the same order.
 
Vanda Kiszli from Hungary claimed her fifth individual canoe marathon European Champion title over 26,20 kilometres. The 2023 European and World Champion concluded the course with a big advantage after 2:06:10.32 of racing. Kiszli, who also had a lot of success in K2s at previous championships, was individual European Champion in the seasons 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, she won medals also in 2016 and 2017. Tania Alvarez from Spain was second (+2:37.67) and Zsofia Voros from Hungary finished third (+2:38.65).
 
The European Champion title in men's senior K1 event stayed in the hands of Mads Pedersen. Danish kayaker won his fourth title - third consecutive - of the best in Europe, being the fastest in 2019, 2022, 2023 and in 2024. He completed the 29,80 kilometres long course in 2:07:42.29. French kayaker Jeremy Candy won silver medal (+37.76), while James Russell from Great Britain finished third (+4:56.71).
 
Hungarian Daniel Zemen is the new junior European Champion in men's K1 event over 22,60 kilometres (1:44:06.40). Italian Leonardo Candela was second (+1.30) and Tamas Ivancso from Hungary won bronze medal (+2.30) in a very tight race.
 
Panni Kadler and Panka Zatyko from Hungary were the fastest in women's K2 junior race. The athletes competed in a 19 kilometres long course, and the winning duo completed the race in 1:28:12.03. Silver medal went to Germans Lotte Liwowski and Caroline Heuser (+46.98) and bronze to Hungarians Janka Reisz - Klaudia Kmetyo (+2:12.75).
 
On Sunday, the 2024 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships will conclude with senior K2 men, K2 women, C2 men and K2 junior men events.
