Canoe Slalom legend Norbert Sattler passed away 20.1.2023

Austrian Canoeing mourns the death of Norbert Sattler, former canoe slalom World Champion and Olympic medallist, who passed away at the age of 71 on 19 January 2023.


Norbert Sattler, who was born on 4 October 1951, represented Austria at major canoe slalom competitions from the late 1960s to mid-1980s, but was later still seen competing at lower level canoe slalom competitions. Austrian kayaker from Carinthia won silver medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where he finished the final just behind Siegbert Horn, representing East Germany.
 
A year later, at the 1973 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Moutathal Norbert Sattler claimed World Champion title. In 1977 he won also individual bronze medal at the World Championships in Spittal. In addition, he became team World Champion in men’s kayak in 1971, and claimed two team silver medals at World Championships in 1977 and 1979 (Jonquiere). Kayaker from Klagenfurt secured the Austrian national championship title 35 times.
