Canoe Slalom paddlers competed in Tokyo at first international race 20.10.2019

The 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo are less than a year away and canoe slalom paddlers took the opportunity to train and compete in Japan at NHK Cup international race. European paddlers took majority of the medals in Japan’s capital.

In the first final of the competition weekend it was a double win for Slovenian canoeists. This year’s European Champion Benjamin Savšek won in men’s C1 in front of his teammate and bronze medallist of this year’s World Championships Luka Božič. Local hero Takuya Haneda picked up bronze medal in front of many Japanese media representatives who came to Kasai Kayak Centre to follow the race.

There was a double win in women’s K1 final too. British paddlers Mallory Franklin and Kimberley Woods concluded the race in positions one and two respectively, while German kayaker Ricarda Funk won bronze medal.

Franklin and Woods stood on the winner’s podium in women’s C1 event, after finishing second and third. Spanish paddler Nuria Vilarrubla, this year’s European Championships medallist was the fastest in this final.

The only non-European winner of the day was Michal Smolen who was the fastest in men’s kayak event. Italian paddler Giovanni de Gennaro was second and German representative Hannes Aigner third.
