It has been confirmed that canoe sprint events will be part of the European Universities Games for the first time in 2018. The games will be organised between 15th and 27th July in Coimbra, a home of Portugal’s oldest University. Canoeing events will take place in nearby Montemor-o-Velho, a venue which will also host Canoe Sprint World Championships later this year. Canoeing events are scheduled for 21st, 22nd and 23rd July.
Canoeing will be a novelty of the fourth edition of the European Universities Games and will be the thirteenth sport added in the competition programme. The first two editions which were organised in Cordoba, Spain, and Rotterdam, Netherlands, had ten sports in the programme and the third edition in Zagreb and Rijeka, Croatia, offered an extended programme with 21 sports, compulsory eight sports, eleven optional sports, demo sports programme and sports for students with disabilities for the first time in academical sport. This year's edition will offer thirteen sports, some of them proposed by the organising committee, which is led by Mario Santos, former president of the Portuguese Canoe Federation.
Besides canoe sprint European students will also compete in badminton, basketball, 3x3 basketball, football, futsal, handball, judo, rowing, rugby, table tennis, para table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
It is expected that 4500 athletes from 300 universities in 40 countries will participate in fourth edition of the European Universities Games.
