ECA’s Board of Directors decided to follow the decisions of the ICF, so majority of the events this spring and summer has already been either cancelled or postponed. There is a strong incentive to organise Senior Canoe Slalom European Championships in September and Prague has offered to host the competition instead of cancelled one in London – Lee Valley which was scheduled for this week. The position of the board, however, is that the Championships (in any discipline) can only be valid if all European teams can attend, in case of a lockdown and majority of the teams missing from the Championships it would be against the competition rules.
There are also discussions in place with the organisers of other European Championships to postpone them to a later date. Hungarian Canoe Federation is interested to host Canoe Marathon European Championships in Budapest in the first week of October; there are talks with the Romanian Canoe Federation regarding the Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships. The idea arose to postpone the ECA Ocean Racing European Championships to the year 2021, but nothing has yet been confirmed. Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom and Wildwater Canoeing European Championships in Krakow and Solkan which are scheduled for mid August might be postponed to later date, but this also needs to be discussed with the organisers and will depend on the situation across Europe. With the current situation in Russia the future of Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships in Moscow is very uncertain.
ECA will now prepare a new proposal of the competition calendar for 2020 which will be harmonised with the organisers and also ICF. ECA’s Board of Directors will meet again in the first week of June to assess the pandemic situation, to confirm the new proposed dates and to determine the deadlines to which teams will have to enter the competitions.
The organisation of the 2022 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships was awarded to Cagliari (ITA) but the venue will be a subject to technical appraisal first. The 2022 Junior and U23 Wildwater Canoeing European will be organised in Banja Luka (BIH).
Canoe Sprint Committee pointed out they want to follow the tradition to introduce new venues, so the 2023 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships was awarded to Bratislava (SVK), but the venue will be a subject to technical appraisal to see if it meets the standards to host major international competition. The ECA Dragon Boat Nations and Clubs European Championships will be organised on Lake Bled in Slovenia, but the venue will also be a subject to technical appraisal. The ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in 2023 will be organised in Slavonski Brod, Croatia.
The next ECA Congress which is set for 2021 will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia, in the last week of March or the first week in April.
As mentioned earlier ECA’s Board of Directors will again meet in the first week of June when it will decide definitely on the future of competitions in August and also confirm the proposed dates of other European Championships from September on.
