Canoe Sprinters enjoyed the 2018 Nelo Winter Challenge 21.2.2018

Well known boat manufacturer who celebrates 40th anniversary this year organised another edition of interesting event, so called Nelo Winter Challenge. Montebelo Aguieira Lake Resort, the largest of the Nelo Training Centres, hosted two races past weekend. Over 250 competitors took part in a 1500 metres race as well as in 150 metres race. In the time trial athletes started every minute and the winner was the fastest in each category. In the 150 metres race a knockout format was used to determine the finalists. Results of both races were then combined to get the overall winners in each category. The best in women’s kayak overall standings was Portugal’s Teresa Portela, Roi Rodriguez (ESP) was the winner in men’s kayak standings, Martin Fuksa (CZE) won men’s C1 event and Olesya Romasenko (RUS) won women’s C1 event.


Russian canoeist Olesya Romasenko was the fastest both in 1500 and 150 metres races and there was no doubt she will be an overall winner of the category. In 1500 metres race Antia Jacome Conto and Patricia Coco Rohde (both ESP) finished second and third, while in 150 metres race Coco Rohde finished second and Irina Andreeva (RUS) third.
In women’s kayak event Teresa Portela (POR) celebrated a win in 150 metres race, ahead of her compatriots Francisca Laia and Joana Vasconcelos. Portela was also an overall winner of the Nelo Winter Challenge. In the longest race Lize Broekx and Hermien Peters (both BEL) finished in positions one and two, while Russian Kira Stepanova produced the third time of the race.
Roi Rodriguez from Spain celebrated an overall win in men’s kayak. 23-year-old competitor from Galicia finished second in 150 metres race behind his teammate Carlos Garrote Ballestero and ahead of French paddler Aurelien Le Gall, while Rodriguez finished third in 1500 metres race, behind Fernando Pimenta (POR) and Cyrille Carre (FRA).
In men’s canoe Martin Fuksa (CZE) won in overall standings after being the fastest in 1500 metres race and fourth in the short distance. Sergio Vallejo Esperon (ESP) and Oleg Tarnovschi (MDA) finished second and third in 1500 metres event, while Adrian Sieiro Barreiro (ESP), Henrikas Zustautas (LTU) and Thomas Simart (FRA) occupied the top positions in the 150 metres final.
