Catalin Chirila sportsman of the year 2023 5.3.2024

Canoe sprinter Catalin Chirila was named the best sportsman of the year 2023 in Romania. The 25-year-old canoeist won medals at last year’s World Championships in Duisburg and at European Games in Krakow.


During the gala event at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest awards in 20 categories were given to those who excelled in the past year and the main award of the evening went to the hands of Romanian canoe sprinter Catalin Chirila who was named best Sportsman in Romania in the year 2023. The nominations and voting for the winners were carried out by the Romanian Sports Press Association.
 
Paddler from Tulcea had a memorable season, in June he won silver medal at the European Games 2023 Krakow-Malopolska, where he finished second in men’s C1 500 metres event, only Czech Martin Fuksa was ahead of Chirila. In the same distance the best Romanian sportsman became World Champion in Duisburg and added a silver medal in the 1000 metres distance of the World Championships. There again, Martin Fuksa from Czechia was the only one who was able to beat Chirila.
 
In the nomination for the best sportsman of the year were also included Constantin Popovici (diving) and Vlad Dascălu (cycling).
 
Among the nominees for the coach of the year award was canoeing coach Florin Popescu, but the award went to the hands of Antonio Colamonici, rowing coach and coordinator of the Olympic rowing team.
