Peter Kauzer, two times Canoe Slalom World Champion, European Champion, Olympic medallist, Overall World Cup series winner, has another award to add to his impressive collection. 34-year-old Slovenian paddler received an award in the Sportsman of the year 2017 category after receiving more votes than German Canoe sprint star Tom Liebscher and legendary Southafrican canoe marathon champion Hank McGregor.
“I was surprised after learning I am amongst the finalists, because looking at the results there were better candidates than me. I am very proud that members of the academy voted for me. To win in a category where all the disciplines are combined is something special. This award is a recognition of all my past successes and confirmation I left a mark in canoeing even before the end of my sporting career,” said Kauzer, who was not present at the ceremony. He is still in Australia for his winter training camp.
Young Czech wildwater athlete Barbora Dimovova (born in 2000) was named Junior of the year and it was not a surprise.
