Champion Race in Pau again a success

Many top French and international canoe slalom paddlers are currently in Pau, where they are preparing for the challenges of the new season. At the venue, which has previously hosted both World and European Championships as well as several World Cup events, this week a strong international competition - the Pyrenees Cup - is taking place. This race is part of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Ranking Series and it also counts as the ECA Open Canoe Slalom European Cup. Prior to this, they organised an exciting Champion Race.

The special Champion Race took place on a shortened course with fewer gates and in the evening hours, adding to its appeal with the final held under floodlights. The athletes competed on a 210 metres long course with 14 gates, four of them were upstream.

Experienced Spanish canoeist Nuria Villarubla took the win in women’s canoe final, stopping the clock at 56.92 with no penalty seconds. Italian Marta Bertoncelli came in second, while Ainhoa Lameiro (ESP) finished third. In men’s canoe final Mewen Debliquy, young French representative, beat his compatriots Jules Latimier and Adrien Fischer for the top position. Coline Charel (FRA) was unbeatable in women’s kayak final of the Champion Race, finishing the course in 52.95. She picked up two penalty seconds, but was still half a second ahead of Leire Goni (ESP), while Marjorie Delassus won third place. French athletes celebrated a double win in men’s kayak final with Benjamin Renia taking the first place and Julien Pajaud finishing second. Czech kayaker Matyas Novak was third.
