The historic Portuguese city of Coimbra is ready to welcome 500 athletes, representing 18 European Countries, at the 2019 ECA Canoe Polo European Championships. This will be the 13th edition of ECA Canoe Polo European Championships and the first to be organised in Portugal.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday and the actual tournament will kick off a day later, on Thursday. The last matches of the European Championships will be played on Sunday afternoon.
Teams from 18 European countries will fight for the medals in four categories: men's and women's senior and men's and women's U21 age groups. Teams are coming from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Fifteen national teams will fight in men's senior event, nine in women's senior, fifteen in men's U21 and ten in women's U21 age groups.
The 2019 ECA Canoe Polo European Championships will carry an Eco evenet label which gives the event a character of responsibility, concern and sustainability. On the venue there will be a separate collection system for the disposal of packaging waste from the public and the participating entities. It is part of this commitment to implement the programme and ensure that this waste is collected and sent to ERSUC facilities, where it will be sorted and subsequently sent for recycling.
Previous ECA Canoe Polo European Championships was organised in Saint-Omer, France. The medals in women's senior event went to Germany, France and Switzerland, in men's senior event to Spain, Germany and Italy, in women's U21 age group to Germany, Poland and France and in men's U21 group to Great Britain, Germany and Russia.
