Hungarian canoe sprinter Danuta Kozák has been named best female athlete of the year 2018. Five-time Olympic champion received an award for outstanding achievements in last season, when she won six medals at European and World Championships, five of them gold.
Danuta Kozák is the best Hungarian sportswoman of the year 2018 according to votes of sports journalists, members of Hungarian sports journalists association. Kozák won in front of swimmer Karinka Hosszú, who won four gold medals at the 2018 World Championships, and tennis player Tímea Babos, winner of the 2018 Australian Open in doubles together with French player Kristina Mladenović.
Kozák picked up three medals at European Championships in Serbia and three medals at World Championships in Portugal in 2018. In Belgrade she won the European Champion title in women’s K1 500 metres event, and became European champion in women’s K4 500 meters event together with Anna Kárász, Erika Medveczky and Dóra Bodonyi. In addition to that she won silver medal in women’s K1 200 meters final.
Even more impressive was her performance at World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho. There she won three gold medals. One in K1W 500 metres event, another in K2 500 metres final together with Anna Kárász and the third one in K4 500 metres event, in the same crew boat as already celebrated earlier that year in Belgrade.
After receiving the award Danuta Kozák expressed gratitude to her family, “I am extremely grateful to them because they help a lot with our little girl. With Zora, I learned that mothers can do a great job and not only in sports, but also have to learn to divide their time. Thank you very much to my husband, who is fully supportive as my coach and my partner. My career is a great journey, in which we are not just two but three.”
