Defending champion Robinson-Shaw showed power on the opening day of Europeans in Graz 28.8.2024

The 2024 ECA Canoe Freestyle European Championships which takes place this week in Graz kicked off with preliminary round in three events contested in Austria. The main favourites for the European Champion titles showed great performances in the opening round.


British canoe freestyler Otillie Robinson-Shaw concluded the first competition day at the top of the scoreboard in women’s senior kayak event. The 22-year-old athlete, who was seriously injured last fall and winter, already won at the 2024 World Cup race in Plattling this May, and is again the main favourite for the gold this weekend. She concluded the day with 2063.33 points, by far the highest score of all the athletes in this event. Polish representative Zofia Tula was second in the preliminary round with a total of 1612.33 points, while local paddler Jasmin Stangl-Brachnik (AUT) concluded the day in third position (1420.00). Top 20 athletes from the preliminary round in women’s senior kayak event advanced to the quarterfinal phase. In addition to British, Polish and Austrian representatives, athletes from Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and France advanced to the next round in this event.
 
In men’s senior kayak event Tomasz Czaplicki from Poland earned the highest score of the day – 2986.67 points. Ireland’s David McClure was second in the preliminary round with a total of 2896.67 points, and the defending champion Tom Dolle from France started the championships with the third highest score of the day – 2730.00 points. Here too the top 20 athletes from the preliminary round qualified for the quarterfinal. In addition to Polish, Irish and French athletes, there will be competitors from Great Britain, Spain, Austria, Slovakia and Belgium fighting for the places in the Friday’s semifinal.
 
Men’s junior kayak preliminary round concluded with Nil Garcia Parra from Spain at the top of the scoreboard with a total of 1956.66 points. French competitor Remi Teillerie was second on the first competition day with 1580.00 points, and Tim Rees from Germany was third (1553.33 points). Here, the top 10 athletes advanced from the preliminary round directly to semifinal. Autrian, Finish and British competitors will fight for the final spots with athletes from Spain, France and Germany.
 
On Thursday, the 2024 ECA Canoe Freestyle European Championships continues with preliminary round in men’s and women’s canoe event and quarterfinal in men’s and women’s senior kayak.
