ECA president Zoungrana took part in the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees 3.3.2025

Jean Zoungrana, president of the European Canoe Association, took part in the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees in Frankfurt. Here, President Spyros Capralos was re-elected unanimously alongside vice-President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė and treasurer Peter Mennel.


The European Olympic Committees (EOC) held a 54th EOC General Assembly in Frankfurt, Germany, with the EOC Director and Executive Committee elections took place. President Spyros Capralos will lead the European Olympic Committees for the next four years at the head of an Executive Committee. President Capralos was re-elected to the position alongside vice-President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė and treasurer Peter Mennel. Italian NOC Secretary General Carlo Mornati was elected as the new EOC Secretary General, and will replace Raffaele Pagnozzi, who is retiring after 19 years in the role. The elections for the Executive Committee saw six of the previous members re-elected to their positions, with six new members elected to join them for the four-year mandate from 2025 – 2028.

 

“A congress was held in presence of the IOC President Thomas Bach who recalled the importance of Olympic values ​​in the geopolitical context that we know. There are also the issues related to E-sports and the emergence of AI and its impact on sport. During the congress there were also emotional moments with the tributes paid in particular to Andrzej Krasnicki, president of the Polish Olympic Committee, who passed away, with a tribute paid in the presence of his family, as well as the young athletes who were rewarded for their sporting achievements. In addition, the presentation of Paris 2024 allowed us to look back on the magic of the Paris 2024 Games that we experienced this summer.” Zoungrana pointed out some of the highlights.

 

During the Assembly the EOC, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and Turkish National Olympic Committee (NOC) have signed the Host City Contract for the Istanbul 2027 European Games. The delegates were also given the reports on various topics, such as details on the work of the EOC EU Office, the implementation of the EOC Strategic Agenda 2030 and updates from the future hosts of the European Youth Olympic Festivals (EYOF). The Summer EYOF 2025 will be held in Skopje, and the upcoming Winter and Summer EYOFs will be organised in Brașov, Romania, and Lignano Sabbiadoro 2027, Flanders, Belgium, and Liepāja, Latvia were confirmed as the hosts of the Summer editions in 2029 and 2031.

 

EOC Olympic Laurel Awards were presented to the President of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Academy and former NOC Secretary General, Mr. Agajan Abiyev; former Great Britain NOC President and IOC Member Sir Hugh Robertson; Gerhard Heiberg, Honorary IOC Member; and Prof. Dr. Tamas Sterbenz, Rector of the Hungarian University of Sports Science. The winner of the 13th Summer Piotr Nurowski Prize was Hungarian taekwondo athlete Viviana Márton.
 
 
“It was dense and rich congress, perfectly organised by the German Olympic Committee and with, as always, many opportunities for exchanges with those involved in the European sports movement on the sidelines of the congress,” concluded Zoungrana.
 
The EOC confirmed Hungarian capital Budapest as the host city for the 55th EOC General Assembly, which is expected to be held in early October 2026.
