Vice-President of the European Canoe Association Jaroslav Pollert received the Czech state award on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia at the end of the First World War on October 28th, the country’s national day and holiday. President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman awarded Jaroslav Pollert with the First degree Medal of Merit.
“It was a great experience,” said Pollert after receiving this award. Scientist, university teacher and specialist in hydrodynamics of dispersal systems, former triple Canoe Slalom World Champion was among the 39 personalities Czech president awarded the state awards.
“It was a huge, lifelong experience. I was glad that my children, son and daughter, were able to be with me. I have found out about the award in July when I was informed by the Miroslav Sklenář, the chief of protocol. But it had to remain secret. The atmosphere at the ceremony is very strong, quite different from when you look it on TV. This is very similar to sports. It is always stronger live. On the first level, this is an award for the sporting past and then for my scientific activity within the university. I especially appreciate the second part, because there are not so many awards in the scientific field,” also said Pollert.
Among those who received the medals on Prague Castle were also former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, president of Slovenia Borut Pahor, Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl, the most famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, whose work can be seen mostly in Ljubljana, Prague and Vienna (he was awarded posthumously), famous Czech musicians Helena Vondráčková, Eva Urbanová and Jaromír Nohavica, speed skater Martina Sáblíková, who is 3-times Olympic Champion, 17-times World Champion ...
