European canoe sprinters showed power in Samarkand 27.8.2024

Canoe sprinters contested World Champion titles for the first time in history on Asian soil. Uzbekistan, more precisely historic Samarkand, hosted this year's canoe sprint World Championships. Athletes fought for the medals in non-Olympic disciplines and representatives of European nations won majority of the medals.


Hungarian team once again topped the medals table with a total of eight medals, two golds, four silvers and two bronze medals. Emese Kohalmi had a good championships, winning three medals over three competitions days. She was crowned World Champion in women's 1000 and 5000 metres finals and was a part of mixed K4 500 metres crew that won silver medal.
 
Portugal had a successful championships, celebrating six medals in Uzbekistan. They won two gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Messias Baptista was the one winning two golds, one in men's 200 metres final and the second in mixed K2 500 metres final togehter with Teresa Portela. Both Portela and Baptista were members of mixed K4 crew with Pimenta and Laia, that won bronze medal in 500 metres event. Portela and Francisca Laia won silver medal in women's K2 200 metres event. Fernando Pimenta won two silver medals in men's K1 500 and 5000 metres event in addition to the mixed K4 bronze medal.
 
The 2024 Olympic champion Josef Dostal, who was the best in 1000 metres event of the Paris Olympic Games, was crowned World Champion in the 500 metres distance, and won bronze medal in mixed K2 500 event, where he joined forces with his fiancée Anezka Paloudova. Martin Fuksa, Czech canoeist who was crowned Olympic Champion in the 1000 metres event, was second this time, finishing the race behind Moldova's Serghei Tarnovschi, who was also on the podium in the 5000 metres event, finishing second there.
 
Poland concluded the chamnpionships with three medals, two of them gold, thanks to Oleksii Koliadych who was the best in men's C1 200 metres final, and Wiktor Glazunow, who was the best in the 5000 metres event. Jakub Stepun added silver in men's K1 200 metres final.
 
Ukraine celebrated two golds in women's canoe events. Liudmyla Luzan was the fastest in women's C1 500 metres event and Liudmyla Kuklinovska in women's K1 200 metres final. Yurii Vandiuk - Pavlo Borsuk won bronze in men's C2 1000 metres final, and Valeriia Tereta was third in the longest 5000 metres event in women's C1.
 
In the last event of the championships Mads Brandt Pedersen won gold medal in men's K1 5000 metres race, which was the second medal for Denmark, as Bolette Nyvang Iversen picked up bronze in women's K1 200 metres final.
