European Champion cannot imagine life without canoeing

European Champion cannot imagine life without canoeing 16.2.2020

The 2019 European Champion and 2017 World Champion in women’s canoe Mallory Franklin cannot imagine her life without a boat, as she confessed during the presentation of TeamGB for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The 25-year-old Mallory Franklin born in Windsor has secured herself a spot in British team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in women’s canoe. She has been among the best world’s paddlers for several seasons now. In 2019 she celebrated her first individual European Champion title in women’s C1 (she already had three individual silver medals and a bronze from European Championships in C1, as well as five team medals at European Championships). At the same championships she also picked up a silver medal in women’s K1.

After a tough battle with Kimberley Woods who also excels both in kayak and canoe (she was 2017 European Champion in canoe) both British paddlers managed to book a ticket for Japan, Franklin in Canoe and Woods in kayak. “We compete against each other and that's created some friction and it's tough to keep pushing a happy and healthy relationship when there's so much at stake and you are both chasing the same thing. Now we've both been selected we can compete together rather than against each other and it will be great to have her there for support,” said Franklin.

The love affair with canoeing started twenty years ago with a day by the River Thomas watching her older brother Zak. “I use canoeing to relax because it's my way of releasing from the pressures of life, it is my off switch from the real world. I canoe, eat, sleep and probably watch a bit too much TV - but I love what I do, even if that sounds a bit boring. I love being on the water, the idea of doing something else is a bit scary, I always need to be paddling and I can't imagine ever stopping. My fiancé is a canoeist and we've been together since we were 14, canoeing is my life, it's at home and work,” Franklin also said.
