European paddlers excelled at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Exciting canoeing action at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has come to an end on Saturday, a day before the curtain fell on the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad with closing ceremony. 49 medals were awarded at the National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne in canoe sprint and canoe slalom. Majority of the medals – 32 – were awarded to representatives of European nations, and Europe remains the strongest canoeing continent.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games concluded with great results of European paddlers, however, Australia and New Zealand topped the medals table in canoe slalom and canoe sprint respectively. Athletes from 12 European countries (France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, Spain, Czechia, Slovakia, Denmark, Ukraine and Moldova) reached the podium in canoeing - Germany, Italy and Spain won medals both in canoe sprint and canoe slalom.

Host nation – France – was dominant on the rapids and won three medals in canoe slalom and kayak cross - gold and two silvers.

Germany left Paris with four medals in canoe sprint and two in canoe slalom, meaning they were third in the medals table of canoeing at the 2023 Olympic Games, behind New Zealand and Australia.

Hungarian canoe sprint team won seven medals, most of all participating nations, but the gold medal slipped away this time, and they left home with four silver and three bronze medals.

Czechia won two gold medals in canoe sprint, while Italy won two medals overall – gold in canoe slalom and silver in canoe sprint.

Great Britain concluded canoe slalom events with four medals – two silver and two bronze.

Before the Olympic Games Spain was considered one of the main favourites in all events in the Olympic programme, this time they won three bronze medals – one in canoe slalom and two in canoe sprint.

Poland and Ukraine each won one silver medal in Paris. Poland was successful in canoe slalom and Ukraine in canoe sprint.

One bronze medal either in canoe slalom or canoe sprint was won by Slovakia, Denmark and Moldova.
