Fernando Pimenta named IOC ambassador

Fernando Pimenta named IOC ambassador 4.11.2020

The best Portuguese Canoe Sprinter Fernando Pimenta was appointed as ambassador of the International Olympic Committee in their Believe in Sport project.

Portuguese Olympic Committee announced that Fernando Pimenta was named ambassador of the Believe in Sport project to promote the awareness of athletes regarding the risks of manipulating competitions. In their announcement they pointed out kayaker from Ponte de Lima will work closely with the COP to help his colleagues recognize and report possible situations of manipulation.

The project Believe in Sport was launched in 2018 to raise awareness among athletes, entourage and officials of the threat of competition manipulation. "If the course or result of a competition is fixed in advance, sport becomes meaningless and loses its credibility. The IOC wants athletes and fans to continue to believe in sport. It is therefore necessary to safeguard its integrity. The campaign, launched in October 2018 at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, is the result of collaborative work with representatives from International Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees, athletes and coaches," says the presentation of the campaign.

"It is gratifying and a source of pride to be an ambassador for the IOC and the Believe in Sport project to help promote good practices in sport and for athletes of all sports to know the risks of manipulating results and competition. Nowadays it is increasingly important to be aware that this is a reality and that we have to ban people who harm sport. We need a clean sport, without cheating, with sporting truth. It is a pleasure for me to represent Portuguese athletes with the IOC and to work with the COP to help my colleagues," said Pimenta.
