Fernando Pimenta, Teresa Portela and K4 in the spotlight of Portuguese gala 18.2.2020

Portuguese Canoe Federation awarded the best athletes and teams of the season 2019 at the Gala awards that were held in Coimbra, a host city of last year’s ECA Canoe Polo European Championships. Fernando Pimenta, Teresa Portela and men’s K4 crew took the main awards of the ceremony.


Fernando Pimenta was not surprisingly named best male athlete of the year. 30-year-old paddler from Ponte de Lima won two silver medals at the 2019 European Games in Minsk (K1 1000m and K1 5000m) as well as two bronze medals at World Championships in Szeged  (K1 1000m and K1 5000m).
 
The best female athlete of the year award went to the hands of Teresa Portela, who finished eighth in women’s K1 200 meters final of the World Championships in Szeged and therefore secured an Olympic quota for Portugal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
 
Emanuel Silva, João Ribeiro, Messias Baptista and David Varela also secured an Olympic quota for Portugal in men’s K4 500 metres event after finishing sixth in the final of the World Championships in Hungary. This brought them the title of the best team of the year.
 
The best coach of the year is Rui Fernandes and Iago Bebiano received an Young Hope award.
