First Finalists Known at the European Championships in Pitesti 3.7.2025

The 2025 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships has kicked off with the heats races in Pitesti – Bascov, Romania. On the opening day, the spotlight was on some of the strongest canoe sprint nations, such as Hungary, Czechia, Ukraine, Poland, and others.


The first day of the Championships saw intense competition, with young athletes securing places in the finals through strong performances in the heats, earning a chance to fight for medals. Hungary led the way, dominating many of the events with the best times of the day.
 
The action started early, with Zoltan Mircse setting the fastest time of the day in the junior men's 1000 metres event, while Zsimbor Marenec-Dozsa was the fastest in the same distance in the junior canoe category. The second-fastest time in that event was recorded by local athlete Dariusz Vlaciu, last year's European champion.
 
In the junior women’s kayak 1000 metres, Hungary’s Mirtill Moor posted the best time, while in the U23 women’s kayak category, Eszter Rendessy was the fastest in both the 1000 and 500 metre heats. Last year’s U23 European champion in the WK1 500, Britain's Kristina Armstrong, had the fourth-fastest time overall in the heats.
 
Levente Jancso and Levente Gyarmati (HUN) set the best time in the MK2 Junior 1000, and Hungary’s dominance didn’t stop there. Vince and Abel Farago-Toth were the fastest in the MC2 Junior 1000, Hanna Hollo led the WK1 Junior 500, Marcell Gazdag was best in the MK1 Junior 500, Milan Gyanyi topped the MC1 Junior 500, Hollo – Acelos won the WK2 Junior 500, and Palfalvi – Gyanyi were the fastest in the MC2 Junior 500.
 
It was also a successful day for the Polish team. In the U23 men’s K2 500 metres event, Alex Borucki and Valerii Vichev were the fastest, Kacper Sieradzan recorded the best time in the MC1 U23 500, Kitewski – Holdak led the MC2 U23 500, and Poland also topped the MK4 U23 500.
 
In the U23 canoe category, last year’s European champion Adam Rudolf from Czechia is aiming for another top result, while in the U23 men’s kayak 1000 metres, the fastest time was set by Dzianis Yermadenka (AIN). Germans Tobias Hammer and Hanno Wortmann led the MK2 U23 1000 heats.
 
The Ukrainian team celebrated after Yelizaveta Vozniuk set the fastest time in the women’s junior canoe 500 metres, and Iryna Nediko – Oleksandra Turchyn led the WC2 Junior 500 event. Slovakia came out on top in the women’s K4 U23 500, and two of K4 crew, Burgar – Sidova, were the fastest in the WK2 500 event. Slovakia also had the best time of the day in the MK4 Junior 500 event.
 
Italy’s Olympia Della Giustina posted the best time in the women’s C1 500 metres heats, where last year’s champion, Hungary’s Dora Horanyi, finished second. Serbia’s Branko Lagundzic was the fastest kayaker in the MK1 U23 500, and his teammates shone in the women’s junior K4 500. Turkey’s Sulac – Sarac topped the MK2 Junior 500.
 
On Friday, the semifinals will take place, along with the 200-metre heats races.
