The 2025 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships in Pitesti, Romania, has entered into the decisive phase. Saturday featured the first finals, where young athletes competed for European titles. Ten championships events were held, with gold medals going to Hungary, Germany, Czechia, Denmark, Poland, and – to the delight of the home crowd – Romania.
In the very last A final of Saturday’s programme, the national anthem of this year's host country echoed in honour of the winners. Romania’s Alexei Domentean and Georgel Baragau triumphed in the men's U23 C2 1000 event. They crossed the finish line in 3:39.423, which was 0.840 seconds faster than their closest rivals, Ukraine’s Yaroslav Verbliud and Vitalii Prystai. The bronze medal went to Hungary’s Milan Meszaros and Iliasz Mitropoulos.
In the men’s U23 kayak double over 1000 metres, the victory went to Poland, with Alex Borucki and Valerii Vichev finishing first. Germans Tobias Hammer and Hanno Wortmann came second, and Bulgarians Branimir Hristov and Preslav Simeonov placed third. Germany celebrated another win in the men’s K1 U23 1000 metres final, where Tobias Hammer was unbeatable. Second place went to Spain’s Alberto Llera, and third to Dzianis Yermolenka (AIN).
In the junior women’s kayak 1000 metres final, Denmark’s Frida Soborg took gold, followed by Laura Csomova of the Czech Republic and Hungary’s Mirtill Moor. In the men’s U23 canoe 1000 metres final, Czech paddler Adam Rudolf successfully defended his European title and once again claimed the top step of the podium. Less than a second behind was Poland’s Kacper Sieradzan, with Hungary’s David Uhrin in third.
Half of Saturday’s victories went to Hungary. The success began with the first morning A final, where Zoltan Mircse won the junior K1 1000 metres event. He was followed by Germany’s Lukas Drossart and Estonia’s Roman Orlov. In the junior men’s canoe 1000 metres, Zsombor Marenec – Dozsa was fastest, beating Italy’s Riccardo Caporuscio by half a second, while Czech Martin Novacek claimed third place.
In the women’s U23 kayak event over 1000 metres, Hungary’s Eszter Rendessy delivered the best performance. Estonian Elizaveta Fedorova came second, and Germany’s Enja Roesseling third. The defending champion, Italy’s Giorgia Lacalamita, finished eighth in this year’s final.
In the junior K2 1000 metres event, Hungary’s Levente Jancsco and Levente Gyarmati took gold, with Poles Norbert Midloch and Piotr Szymczak finishing second, and Turkey’s Muhammet Sulak and Hasan Sarac third.
Hungarians Vince Farago-Toth and Abel Farago-Toth became junior European champions in the C2 1000 event. Czechs Marek Skrob and Robin Hirsch were half a second behind, while Ukraine’s Timofii Melnychuk and Ivan Kysil finished two and a half seconds off the lead in third place.
The 2025 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships will conclude on Sunday with 32 medal events, B finals, and Special Olympics kayak races.
