Former Hungarian canoe sprinter Ferenc Varga passed away 1.4.2023

Hungarian canoeing has lost one of the legends of the sport Ferenc Varga who passed away at the age of 97.


Ferenc Varga was Olympic bronze medallist from the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki in the men’s K2 10.000 metres event. He was the first Hungarian canoe sprinter who won a medal at the Olympic Games, alongside his K2 partner József Gurovits.
 
In Mâcon, France, at the 1954 Canoe Sprint World Championships Ferenc Varga also won bronze medal in men’s K4 10.000 metres event.
 
He became Hungarian Champion already at the age of 17 and won his last Hungarian championship in 1966, at the age of 41, but after that, he regularly competed in the master’s Hungarian championships until 2017.
 
He was also involved in canoeing as a coach and worked alongside Otto Bonn in the International Canoe Federation. In 2007 he received the most prestigious award in the sport, the Golden Medal of Merit.
