The 2022 ECA European Open Canoe Slalom Cup in Pau has concluded with finals and it was French and Spanish athletes who celebrated the wins. Coline Charel, Benjamin Renia, Jules Bernardet and Ainhoa Lameiro were those who reached the highest podium positions.
The well-known canoe slalom venue in Pau, which hosted European and World Championships as well as numerous World Cup races, has welcomed athletes from France, Spain, Great Britain, Croatia, Ireland, Andorra, Netherlands, Australia, Iran, Senegal and Venezuela at the Pyrenees Cup race which also counts for the 2022 ECA European Open Canoe Slalom Cup series.
Benjamin Renia was the one who navigated through the gates of the final course and celebrated the win in men’s kayak final. Renia made a touch during his final run, but he was so fast that none of the finalists was able to beat him. Edgar Prigent was second and Noe Perreau third in the final standings for a triple French celebration.
Jules Bernardet (FRA) was the winner of men’s C1 final. Both he and his compatriot Adrien Fischer had a touch in their final run. A little less than a second and a half divided two fastest two finalists in this event. Irish canoeist Jake Cochrane won bronze medal.
France celebrated a win in women’s kayak final as well. Coline Charel was the one who had the best day in Pau, finishing the race ahead of Lucie Baudu (both FRA) and Monica Doria Vilarrubla from Andorra.
Women’s canoe final brought happiness to Spanish canoeist Ainhoa Lameiro who found the best lines in the final. She was 0.40 seconds faster than French representative Angele Hug, while Klara Olazabal from Spain finished in third place.
