Germany and Great Britain excell in Rio de Janeiro 3.10.2018

Paddlers from Germany and Great Britain were the great European winners of this year's canoe slalom World Championships that was held on the 2016 Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro. Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, France, Slovakia, Slovenia, Netherlands and Italy were also among the medallists of the canoe slalom and extreme slalom events in Brazil.


World Championships on the Olympic course in Deodoro kicked off with team events where Slovak men's C1 team - Michal Martikan, Alexander Slafkovsky and Matej Benuš - wrote history. They have won the eighth consecutive world champion title in this event! 
 
The first individual World Champion title of the competition went to the hands of German canoeist Franz Anton who was accompanied on the podium by this year's European Champion Ryan Westley from Great Britain and Sideris Tasiadis from Germany. 
 
In both women's events - K1 and C1 - Australian Jessica Fox picked up the gold medals and also surpassed her parents as the most successful canoe slalom paddler in the history of World Championships. On both occasions Mallory Franklin from Great Britain finished in second position. In women's kayak final this year's European Champion Ricarda Funk from Germany finished third, and Tereza Fišerova from Czech Republic picked up bronze medal in C1 final. 
 
Despite already being Olympic Games, World and European Championships medallist, German kayaker Hannes Aigner won his first individual medal at senior World Championships. Czech star Jiri Prskavec was second and Russian paddler Pavel Eigel was third to win historic first world championships medal for Russia in men's K1 final. 
 
In the C2 mix event Polish duo Marcin Pochwala - Aleksandra Stach won the title in front of French crew Yves Prigent - Margaux Henry and Czech duo Veronika Vojtova - Jan Mašek. 
 
The championships concluded with the extreme slalom races, where Italian kayaker Christian De Dionigi picked up gold medal in men's event and Boris Neveu from France finished second. In women's race Martina Wegman from Netherlands finished second and Russian Polina Mukhgaleeva third.
