Germany defends World Games Canoe Polo titles

Germany is again celebrating a double canoe polo crown of the World Games. In Wroclaw both women’s and men’s national team celebrated a win in the final. Women’s team beat France 5-0 and men’s German team celebrated a 4-1 win against Italy. Italy picked up bronze medal in women’s tournament and Spain in men’s. 


The defending champions of the previous World Games edition, which was held in Colombian Cali, were unbeatable also this year. Germany dominated both men’s and women’s tournament. Women’s team played against France in a gold medal game and celebrated a 5-0 win. Katharina Magdalena Kruse and Elena Gilles scored twice and Leonie Wagner added a goal. Team lead by Klaus Schmalenbach advanced to the final after a 6-1 semi-final win against the team of New Zealand, while France beat Italy 4-3 in the first women’s semi-final match of the day.
 
In the bronze medal match Italy played against the 2016 World Champion New Zealand and won 4-3. Maddalena Lago and Flavia Landolina scored twice for Italian women’s team, and Paris Pidduck scored twice and Julie Bolton once for New Zealand.
 
In men’s part of the tournament Germany celebrated another World Games gold medal. Germany who finished fourth in last year’s World Championships defeated 2016 World Champions from Syracuse – the team of Italy. Jakob Husen, Lukas Richter and twice Jonas Vieren scored for the old/new World Games champions in decisive match of the tournament. Andrea Bertelloni was the only one who managed to score for Italy in the final match. Germany beat France 4-3 in the semi-final and Italy won the second semi-final match against Spain 3-2.
 
In men’s bronze medal game France opened the match with a goal by Patrice Belat in the second period and lead 1-0. Spanish players Angel and Alejandro Gordon Herrero who were in excellent scoring shape in this tournament took matters in their own hands. First they scored a goal for a tied 1-1 result and later scored a winning goal in the first overtime to celebrate a bronze medal.  
 
In the 5th place games Netherlands celebrated a 6-3 win against Canada in women’s tournament and New Zealand won 6-4 in a match against Poland in men’s event.
