Germany's golden opening first final day at Canoe Sprint Europeans Munich 2022

Germany's golden opening first final day at Canoe Sprint Europeans Munich 2022 19.8.2022

First medals awarded at this year's Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe Munich 2022 European Championships with Germans dominating the medal table.

Five medal events were held on the second day of the competition at the Olympic Regatta Centre in Munich, with three nations winning multiple medals. The host nation opened the competition with three gold medals, Hungary won four (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), and Spain winning three (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).

First day of finals was opened by men's K4 1000 meters which was won by the German boat. In a very close race Tobias Schulz, Tom Liebscher, Martin Hiller and Felix Frank won the gold medal (2:53.174) in front of the Spaniards: Francisco Cubelos, Roi Rodriguez, Pedro Vazquez and Iñigo Peña (2:53.627). The bronze medal was won by the Hungarian boat: Mark Mizser, Kornel Beke, Csaba Erdossy and Tamas Erdelyi (2:55.748).

Felix Frank:

"We only knew very short before the championships that we would race together. We had to get together quickly and we had little time to train. It all came together so quickly. That was the same for many other countries, so it made little difference for the race. We have an experienced team with me in fourth position, Toby (Tobias Schultz) in one, Tom (Liebscher) in two and Martin Hiller in three".

Local hero Sebastian Brendel together with his partner, Tim Hecker, won the gold medal in men's C2 over 1000 meters (3:32.896) in a very dominant race. The German pair thus completed the medal collection with the World Championships gold from Halifax a fortnight ago.

"We got away from the start well, had a good middle part and it worked really well, we found a good rhythm and in the end we saw the Italians coming close but we had our quick finish in the right moment and could win the gold medal", said Sebastian Brendel after the race.

The silver medal was won by the Italian pair: Nicolae Craciun and Daniele Santini (3:34.317), with the bronze medal going to the Hungarians Balazs Adolf and Daniel Fejes (3:34.585)

The gold hat-trick for the German team was completed by Jacob Schopf in K1 500 meters (1:38.012).

"It was a really painful race and until the end I wasn’t sure what the outcome was going to be. I was brave in the race, like the Hungarian (Adam Varga) next to me and I think we pushed everyone", Jacob shared his thoughts on the race after the final.

Hungarian Adam Varga came in second (1:38.237), while Fernando Pimenta from Portugal won the bronze (1:38.803).

In the women's K2 over 1000 meters, the Hungarians Emese Kohalmi and Ezster Rendessy won the European gold medal (3:33.942) this adding another medal to a successful season (Kohalmi won gold in K1-5000, and Rendessy silver in K1-1000 at the World Championships in Canada). Silver medal was awarded to the Polish duo, Justyna Iskrzycka and Katarzyna Kolodziejczyk (3:34.606), and the bronze went to Laia Pèlachs and Begoña Lazkano from Spain (3:36.942).

Spaniard Maria Corbera became the European Champion in the women's C1 500 meters (2:03.586).

"I could not see what was happening in the race because I was in the 2nd lane and Liudmyla (Luzan) was on the other side. I was concentrated on my own race and in the finish my mind was very strong and I kept telling myself 'go fast, go fast'. And I crossed the line in the first position, and it's incredible", Corbera did not hide her happiness.

Liudmyla Luzan from Ukraine came in second (2:05.096) with Croatian Vanesa Tot completing the medal podium (2:06.682).

The excitement continues on Saturday at this year’s Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships with another twelve finals in four different distances.
