Great Britain, Italy and Russia celebrate on opening day of Paracanoeing European Championships

Great Britain, Italy and Russia celebrate on opening day of Paracanoeing European Championships 9.6.2018

Belgrade also hosts Europe’s best Paracanoe athletes who are fighting in Ada Ciganlija for the European Champion titles. The first four sets of medals were awarded today. Emma Wiggs, Larisa Volik, Marius Ciustea and David Phillipson were crowned European champions in Va’a 200 metres finals.

Great Britain’s Emma Wiggs came to the Va’a VL 2 200 metres final as the main favourite and she did not have much trouble winning gold medal and European Champion title. Despite the win, she was not satisfied with her performance, “I am not really happy with it, particularly the first half. It’s just great experiencing racing in two boats the Va’a and kayak tomorrow. So, I’ve been trying to juggle the training for that. It’s nice to get out there and be able to perform like that, so I’m really pleased.”

Her compatriot Jeanette Chippington won silver medal and Mariia Nikiforova from Russia bronze medal.

In women’s VL3 event Larisa Volik from Russia celebrated the title in front of Nataliia Lahutenko from Ukraine and Anja Adler from Germany.

Marius Ciustea from Italy was the fastest in men’s VL2 200 metres final. “I went to the race very determined to have a nice race. I am happy,” said Marius after the race.

Roman Serebryakov from Russia and Tamas Juhasz from Hungary joined Italian paracanoeist of the podium.

In men’s VL3 200 metres final it was again a double podium for Great Britain. David Phillipson won in front of Tomas Mozdzierski from Poland and another Briton Jack Eyers.

On Sunday morning we will see paracanoeing kayak finals.
