Hungarian canoeing mourns the death of Olympic Champion László Fábián 11.8.2018

Hungarian canoeing mourns the death of László Fábián, an Olympic and four times World Champion, who passed away at the age of 82. Former athlete and coach is the first Hungarian Olympic gold medallist in canoeing.

 


 
László Fábián was born in 1936 and took up canoeing at the age of fifteen in Budapest. Two years later he already became a member of the national team. His biggest success was Olympic gold medal in the K2 10.000 metres event at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. This was the first gold Olympic medal for Hungarian canoeing in history with many to come later. In addition to Olympic gold medal László Fábián also celebrated four World Champion titles and one silver medal at World Championships. He was the fastest in men’s K2 10.000 metres events in 1958 in Prague, in 1963 in Jajce and in 1966 in East Berlin. The fourth gold medal he won was in men’s K4 10.000 metres event of the 1958 World Championships in Jajce. He finished second in the K4 10.000 metres race in 1966 at World Championships in East Berlin.
 
 
He finished active sporting career in 1969 and later continued as a technical manager and trainer. He received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary in 2012 and the lifetime achievement award of the fair play committee of the Hungarian Olympic Committee. His wife was Katalin Rozsnyói, another successful coach, who raised a series of Olympic and World Champions.
