In the opening day of Canoe Sprint European Championships no problems for favourites 8.6.2018

The 2018 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in Belgrade started with heats and semifinals in 1000 and 500 metres events. Favourites did not have much troubles advancing to the finals which are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The first event of the championships was men’s K1 1000 meters race. The fastest man of all the heats groups was Hungarian Balint Kopasz, who produced almost two seconds faster run than defending champion Fernando Pimenta from Portugal. The third result of the day in this event was recorded by German kayaker Max Rendschmidt.

Sebastian Brendel (GER) produced the fastest run in men's C1 1000 metres heats, in overall standings Piotr Kuleta (POL) and Carlo Tacchini (ITA) came the closest to German canoeist, but Kuleta, for example, had to paddle in the semifinals too, as only the fastest paddler of the group advanced straight to the final A. Karin Johansson (SWE), Nina Krankemann (GER) and Anna Kožiškova (CZE) were the fastest in women’s 1000 metres heats.

Spanish all star K4 with Saul Craviotto, Marcus Walz, Cristian Toro and Rodrigo Germade crossed the finish line of 500 metres event with the best time, to show they will be the main favourites in the final. In women’s K4 500 metres heats Hungarian crew with Anna Karasz, Erika Medveczky, Danuta Kozak and Dora Bodonyi produced the best time.

The fastest K2W 1000 metres crew in today’s heats was German duo Sarah Brüssler – Melanie Gebhardt, their compatriots Yul Oeltze – Peter Kretschmer were the fastest boat of  C2M 1000 metres heats, Slovakians Peter Gelle and Adam Botek were the fastest in K2M 1000 metres heats.

Balint Kopasz was not only the best in 1000 metres heats but also finished the 500 metres heats with the best time of all competing in men’s kayak event. Oleg Tarnovskyji (MDA) was the fastest canoeist in 500 metres heats, Liudmyla Luzan (UKR) the fastest in women’s C1 500 meters event and Milica Starović (SRB) in women’s kayak 500 metres heats.

“I’ll have a race less, which means a lot, because I compete in K4 as well. I need some recovery. All girls are phenomenal, it is going to be good and exciting final,” said Milica Starović after her performance.

We’ve seen heats in five more events today. German crews were the best in men’s K4 1000 metres and K2W 500 metres races with Schopf, Thordsen, Reuschenbach, Gecso winning in men’s K4 and Jasmine Fritz and Steffi Kriegerstein in women’s K2 event. Leonid Carp and Victor Michalachi (ROU) were the best in men’s C2 500 metres heats, Milan Mozgi and Tamas Somoracz (HUN) in men’s K2 500 metres heats and Virag Balla – Kincso Takacs (HUN) in women’s C2 500 meters heats.

The first medals in Belgrade will be awarded tomorrow, when we’ll see 1000 metres and 500 metres finals. Tomorrow we’ll also see paracanoeing races and heats and semi-final in 200 metres events.
