Jesús 'Suso' Morlán (1966 – 2018) 11.11.2018

Spanish canoeing community is in a shock after the death of Jesús 'Suso' Morlán who died after a battle with cancer at the age of 52. He is most known as a coach of five times Olympic medallist David Cal. In the past years Jesús 'Suso' Morlán worked as a coach of Brazilian canoe sprint team and guided Brazilian athletes to three Olympic medals at the 2016 Games.

“Suso Morlan, the man who guided David Cal to his five Olympic medals, has died this Sunday at the age of 52. Morlan, an indispensable name in the history of Galician and national canoeing, was in charge of David Cal’s training since his childhood and was in charge of convincing the Olympic champion not to abandon this discipline when he was about to leave,” reports La Voz de Galicia.

After the successful sporting chapter with Spanish canoeist David Cal ended, Suso Morlán moved to Brazil to take under his wing promising Brazilian canoeists preparing for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. His protégées Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos and Erlon de Sousa won three medals in front of their home crowd in 2016. With eyes already set on Tokyo 2020 Suso Morlán planned to be a part of the 2024 Games as well, La Voz de Galicia reported.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Suso, rest in peace.
