Legendary Renata Csay waved goodbye to competitive sport 10.2.2024

When someone mentions canoe marathon, the first or at least one of the first associations is Renata Csay. A legend of the sport, a true queen of canoe marathon decided to retire from professional sport at the age of 46.


Hungarian Renata Csay is the most successful canoe marathon paddler of all times. During her impressive career she won 20 World and 19 European Champion titles. She started her sporting career at the age of 12 in Gyor. Her first major success came in 1994 at World Championships in Amsterdam, where she won silver medal among juniors. Three years later she won her first senior medal at the 1997 European Championships in Pavia, which was the second canoe marathon European Championships in history. There she picked up silver medal in women’s K2 event together with Andrea Pitz. Two years later the duo won both K2 World and European Champion title.  
 
This is when Csay became unbeatable. She won another 12 World Championships gold medals in K2. After Andrea Pitz she teamed up with Kornelia Szonda, Berenike Faldum, Ramona Farkasdi, Alexandra Bara and Zsofia Czellai-Voros. In addition, she won seven world champion titles in kayak single. Her last world championships gold medal shew won in 2019, 20 years after her first title.
 
She was competing at the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia, when canoe marathon was first part of this major sporting event. She was crowned World Games champion in K1 and K2.
 
Last she competed internationally at the 2022 World Championships, when she finished second in K2 with Zsofia Czellai-Voros. At the same championships, her son Bruno Kolozsvari became junior world champion. Her daughter Lili also became involved in canoeing, and Renata’s husband Gabor Kolozsvari is a former canoeist.
