Leipzig's sports awards in canoeing tunes 11.3.2019

The city of Leipzig has awarded the best athletes in the previous year and canoeing maintains the strong position in the most populous city in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. Almost 32 thousand votes came in the poll and both main awards – sportswoman and sportsman of the year – went to hands of paddlers. Tina Dietze and Franz Anton celebrated wins in their respective categories.

Canoe sprinter Tina Dietze won the Sportswoman award of the year in Leipzig after winning World Champion title in women’s K2 200 metres events together with Franziska Weber at the World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho. They have won a World Champion title only half a year after Dietze’s fracture of the shoulder blade.

Franz Anton was crowned Leipzig’s Sportsman of the year. German canoe slalom paddler won the World Champion title in men’s C1 at the canoe slalom World Championships held on the Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to this, he also picked up gold medal in men’s C2 team event of the 2018 ECA Canoe Slalom European Championships that was held in Prague.
