Llamedo and Vazquez winners of the 82nd International descent of the River Sella 7.8.2018

Spain hosted the 82nd edition of world renowned International descent of the River Sella (Descenso del Sella), taking place in Asturias. The event started in 1930 but was then on hold for a couple of years during the Spanish Civil War. In 1951 the descent already became an international event with participants from Portugal and Italy coming to the river Sella.

 


The winners of this year’s event were Spanish duo Emilio Llamedo Alvarez and Pedro Vazquez Llenin who succeeded Walter Bouzan and Alvaro Fernandez Fiuza on the throne. Bouzan and Fernandez were the winners of the descent between the years 2010 and 2017, but this year they were not on the start line.
 
It was a tough 20 kilometres race and the leading boats fought for the win until the last metres. Only five seconds divided the top three boats at the end. Julio Martinez Gomez and Ruben Gonzalez Pereda were second, while Andrew Birkett and canoe marathon legend Hank McGregor from the Republic of South Africa crossed the finish line third.
 
 
 
In women’s K2 event this year’s ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships bronze medallists Amaia Osaba and Eva Barrios won in front of Tania Elisabeth Alvarez and Tania Fernandez and British duo Fay Lamph and Alice Haws. The winning crew of men’s C2 event was Manuel Antonio Campos – Jose Manuel Sanchez, Jaime Duro and Alvaro Lopez were second, while Jose Oscar Osma and Samuel Alcalde finished third.
 
Individual K1M winner became Borja Estomba, who was followed by Guillermo Fidalgo and Kiko Vega. Arantza Toledo celebrated in front of Celia Remis and Isabel Goikoextea in women’s K1 event, while Diego Suarez, Digo Romero and Javier Bernal stood on the podium of men’s C1 event.
