Maialen Chourraut underwent shoulder surgery

Maialen Chourraut underwent shoulder surgery 25.2.2022

Maialen Chourraut, three-time Olympic medallist, underwent the shoulder surgery to prolong her sporting career in the new Olympic cycle.

38-year-old Spanish canoe slalom paddler Maialen Chourraut won silver medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to complete her Olympic medals collection which already included bronze from London and gold from Rio de Janeiro.

2015 European Champion is only missing World Champion title, even though she has silver and bronze from 2009 and 2011. Paddler from San Sebastian has been among the best world’s paddlers for many years and enormous physical demand came in a high price. Her shoulder came to the point when her sporting career was endangered and the only option to have a chance of fighting for the Olympic spot in Paris 2024 was the surgery. This was not her first procedure. She had gone shoulder surgeries already in 2004 and 2005. After Tokyo she decided to put herself in the hands of Dr. Achalandabaso to find out the reason for these physical problems. After a long search process, the doctor in charge of her physical condition ended up detecting the origin of her injury. It was a labral detachment. In addition, she registered other local causes such as a loose screw from previous operations. For this reason, she has been forced to undergo this tricky intervention.

Following the surgery the rehabilitation process is expected to be long, but the goal is clear. Her mind is set to qualify for her fifth Olympic Games, following her debut in Beijing.
