Croatian town Metković will be the venue of the 2018 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships. The first competitions already started on Monday with ECA Canoe Marathon Masters Cup, while the first official events of the Championships will kick off on Thursday.

Metković, a city well-known by its handball team that was an EHF Cup winner in 2000, will welcome more than 230 boats from 22 European countries. Athletes will fight for European Champion titles from Thursday until Sunday in 17 different events. Among the names on the startlist we can find many excellent paddlers, multiple European and World Championships medallists, such as Hungarians Renata Csay, Alexandra Bara, Vanda Kiszli, Adrian Boros, Portugal’s favourite Jose Ramalho, Spanish canoeist Manuel Campos and more.

The championships will be officially opened on Wednesday with an opening ceremony that is scheduled to be held in summer cinema. On Thursday the competition part of the championships will start with K1W, C1W, C1M and K1M junior events and K1W U23 race. On Friday we will follow C1M U23, K1M U23, K2W Junior, K2M Junior and C2M Junior events, on Saturday Senior C1W,C1M, K1W and K1M races and on Sunday Senior C2M, K2W and K2M events.

The competition will be held on Neretva River which had, among other, important role in the second World War, and these events were depicted in the Oscar nominated film Battle of Neretva, starring Yul Brynner, Orson Welles, Franco Nero ... The actual operation was a German plan for a combined attack launched in early 1943 against Yugoslav Partisans throughout occupied Yugoslavia. The offensive took place between January and April 1943. During the battle the Partisans were caught in a pocket with their back to the Neretva River. Near Jablanica (approx. 90’ kilometres north of Metković), 20,000 Partisans under command of Marshal Josip Broz Tito struggled to save some 4500 wounded comrades and typhus patients together with the Supreme Headquarters and Main Hospital, against some 150,000 Axis combatants.
