Mičo Popovski (1947 – 2017) 27.4.2017

27/04/2017 - It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Mičo Popovski, the first president of the Canoe Federation of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and a doyen of canoeing in this country.


Mičo Popovski died after a long illness at the age of 69. He was a former national canoe slalom and wildwater canoeing champion. He dedicated himself to canoeing not only in the role of an athlete, but also on the organisational level. He served as the first president of the Canoe Federation of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia after the independence of this country, he was a coach, initiator and one of the founders of the Olympic Committee of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
He was also a president of the Kayak club Ilinden 90 where he spent the last years actively committed to the development of youth categories, he was a president of the Sports Association of the city of Skopje and the Association of Sports Federations in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. He was also a coach of the national team, participating in four Olympic Games in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens.
He was a metallurgist engineer by profession and started his career in mines and steel works. He ended his professional career as the head of the urban development department in the city of Skopje.
