ECA's board of directors held an online meeting and agreed on the new proposed calendar for the season 2020, however it is not officially confirmed yet. The board has decided to contact all the European National Federations and ask them to fill in the questionnaire to see whether they will have a chance to attend the competitions on new proposed dates.
“To be named as the ECA Championships, borders of the countries that usually took part in specific discipline have to be open,” pointed out Albert Woods OBE, president of the European Canoe Association. The situation is very difficult as no one at the moment can predict the future and whether the borders of the European countries will be open for all and, also importantly, without restrictions.
The board agreed that the new location of the 2020 ECA Canoe Slalom European Championships is Prague and if the feedback from the national federations is positive the championships could be organised in Czech Republic in September. In the same month there is also a proposal for Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships, while Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom, Canoe Marathon and Senior Canoe Sprint European Championships could be organised in October. Junior and U23 Wildwater Canoeing European Championships has been postponed to November.
After the feedback from the National Federations ECA’s board of directors will meet again and evaluate the situation to see what competitions are likely to be attended by all or majority of the National Federations.
Board of directors also set the deadlines for each of the proposed European Championships when it will be finally confirmed if the championships will be organised or cancelled.
ECA also decided to reopen the bidding process for the 2021 ECA Dragon Boat nations and Clubs European Championships and 2022 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships. Both were awarded to Zagreb, but due to the damages in the city caused by strong earthquake in March the federation and city will not be able to organise the events following the complete cut of funding.
