Nikolai Thomsen adds U23 European Champion title to his World crown 29.7.2022

The second competition day at the 2022 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships brought joy to the host nation. In Silkeborg, Danish kayaker Nikolai Thomsen won the U23 men's K1 European Champion title. Other gold medals of the day went to Hungary and Poland.


Danish kayaker Nikolai Thomsen won in men's U23 event of the 2022 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships in Silkeborg. The 20-year-old was considered the main favourite for the title since he is the reigning U23 World Champion. Not only this, he is also the 2019 junior World Champion and 2019 Junior European vice-champion. The task of winning another gold medal in front of the Danish fans, was not an easy one. At the end, he was less than five seconds faster than Charles Smith from Great Britain, who won silver medal. Joaquin Iglesias from Spain was third in men's U23 K1 event.
 
Today's three gold medals were won by Hungarian athletes. It started with a double win in women's K2 junior event. Reka Paroczi and Renata Karaszi were the best in 19 kilometres long course, finishing the race almost eleven seconds ahead of their teammates Kinga Molnar and Hanna Jozsa, who were second. Bronze medal went to British duo Greta Roeser - Nerys Hall.
 
Hungary celebrated a double win also in men's junior C2 event. Mihaly Pluzsik and Tamas Szollosi are the new Junior European Championships, and Mate Perhacs - Peter Soltesz picked up silver medal. Bronze medal was won by Spanish crew Izan Velasco - Daniel Infantes.
 
Dorina Fekete (HUN) defended her women's U23 K1 European Champion title from the season 2021. The 21-year-old athlete is already experienced competitor despite her young age. She was also second at last year's U23 World Championships, and silver medallist of the 2017 and 2018 World Championships in junior category. It was a tough fight for the gold medal with Danish kayaker Pernille Hostrup who was only a second behind Fekete in the finish. Panna Csepe (HUN) was third.
 
Polish canoeist Adrian Klos was crowned men's C1 U23 European Champion. It took him one hour, 52 minutes and 53 seconds to conclude the race with six laps, five portages and one small lap. Mate Zsidai (HUN) was 25 seconds behind to pick up silver medal and Diego Pineiro from Spain was third.
 
 
On Saturday, the European Championships continues with junior men's kayak event, followed by four senior events - women's and men's C1 and K1 races.
