Olympic Champion Nikolai Gorbachev passed away at the age of 70 10.4.2019

Belarusian canoeing is mourning the death of Olympic Champion Nikolai Stepanovich Gorbachev who died at the age of 70. Nikolai Gorbachev was sprint canoeist who competed in the 1970s. During his career he won medals at Olympic Games and World Championships.


Nikolai Stepanovich Gorbachev recorded his biggest success in 1972 at the Munich Olympic Games where he became Olympic Champion in men’s K2 1000 metres event together with Viktor Kratasyuk. Gorbachev also won three medals at World Championships, all in men’s K4 10000 metres events. He won gold medal at 1974 World Championships in Mexico City and two bronze medals, both in Belgrade (in 1971 and 1975).
 
After the end of his sporting career in 1976 he returned to his hometown Rogachev where he became a coach and also initiated opening of canoeing and rowing school which he lead until 2010.
