Olympic, World and European Champion Gabriella Szabo retired

Very successful Hungarian canoe sprinter Gabriella Szabo decided to retire after 25 years in the sport. The decision came after the postponement of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.


Gabriella Szabo, who celebrated her 34th birthday on 14th August, announced her retirement in June. “With a very heavy heart, but I made the decision. I will close a twenty-five-year chapter in my life. My already fragile spirit was dramatically affected by the announcement that the Olympics had been postponed. I felt unable to do the preparation for another year,” explained Szabo.

 

In her successful career she won three gold Olympic medals (2012: K4 500, 2016: K2 500m, K4 500m) and one silver medal (2008: K4 500m). She has also won three European Champion titles (2011: K2 1000m, 2014: K2 500m, K4 500m) and two Vice-European Champion titles (2011: K4 500m, 2012: K4 500m). She also has nine gold medals (2009: K2 500m, 2010: K2 500m, K2 1000m, 2011: K4 500m, 2013: K2 1000m, K4 500m, 2014: K2 500m, K4 500m, 2015: K2 500m), silver (2015: K4 500m) and bronze medal (2007: K2 1000m) from World Championships.
